Origins: From Modest Beginnings to Global Influence
IOSH’s story began in April 1945, when a group of members from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) met in London to form a special group dedicated to preventing industrial accidents. The formation of the Industrial Safety Officers Section was a modest beginning, driven by volunteers convinced of the necessity of their mission. In 1953, the section gained independence from RoSPA and became the Institution of Industrial Safety Officers. It was only in 1962 that the Institution began employing staff on a full-time basis; until then, it had been run almost entirely by volunteers.
