History

The College of New Jersey was established in 1855 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature as the New Jersey State Normal School. It was the first teacher training school in the state and the ninth in the nation, reflecting a growing emphasis on professional preparation during the mid-19th century. Originally located in downtown Trenton, the institution moved to its present location in Ewing Township during the early 1930s, a relocation that allowed for campus expansion and the development of the Georgian colonial architecture that defines the school’s character today. For many years known as Trenton State College, the college officially adopted its current name, The College of New Jersey, in 1996 to better reflect its broad academic mission and statewide significance.
