A History Spanning Nearly a Century and a Half
The university’s roots stretch back to 1879 with the founding of the Ceramic Technical College in Höhr-Grenzhausen. In the winter semester of 1949-50, the United Technical Schools began teaching courses in a former military barracks in Koblenz, with approximately 300 students in three departments: Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. In 1971, the Koblenz Engineering College was integrated into the newly founded Rhineland-Palatinate University of Applied Sciences, expanding the campus to include Business Administration, Social Work, and Education. The independent ceramics college in Höhr-Grenzhausen became the Department of Ceramics. Finally, on 1 September 1996, Koblenz University of Applied Sciences became an independent institution. In the 1998-99 winter semester, the university opened the new RheinAhrCampus in Remagen, offering programs in Health and Social Economy, Sports Management, and Medical Engineering. Three Campuses, One Vision
The university’s three campuses each possess a distinct character. The Koblenz campus (RheinMoselCampus) is located in the beautiful Rhine Valley, renowned for its scenery and culinary traditions. The Remagen campus (RheinAhrCampus) celebrated its 25th anniversary in October 2023 and offers programs in Business and Social Sciences as well as Mathematics and Technology. Academic Excellence and Practical Orientation
Hochschule Koblenz organizes its academic programs across multiple faculties, including Engineering, Economics, Architecture-Art-Materials, and Social Sciences. The Faculty of Business and Management regards itself as a teaching and research institution geared toward filling professional and management positions at local businesses, ranking among the TOP 10 German universities of applied sciences. Research Driving Innovation
Research is a cornerstone of the university’s identity. Two major research focus areas define its scholarly activity: Analytical Imaging and Data Driven Systems. The interdisciplinary research priority of Data Driven Systems considers biological, technical, economic, and social systems from a holistic perspective. The Koblenz Model Factory of the Faculty of Economics promotes a holistic approach to Business Administration, enabling interactive teaching of complex business processes. The university has also established collaborative research centers, including the Max-von-Laue Institute of Advanced Ceramic Material Properties Studies (CerMaProS) and Data2Health, a research center focusing on trustworthy data analysis for healthcare. In 2023, the university built the first 5G research laboratory in Rhineland-Palatinate, applied to Industry 4.0 and mobile communications teaching.
A Global Community
Internationalization is central to the university’s mission. Approximately 1,000 international students from around 80 countries study at Koblenz University of Applied Sciences. The university maintains a worldwide partner network of over 150 institutions, including around 130 ERASMUS+ partner universities. The Faculty of Business and Management offers four 30-ECTS programs with different majors taught in English. The university also launched a cooperation with Pondicherry University in India in 2020 and a double degree program with the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2019.
